On June 19th, 2012, during the Rio + 20 conference, Instituto-E gathered an international volunteer group formed by members of the delegations of the participating countries and by civil society representatives in order to promote a cleaning up activity in the area of Copacabana and Ipanema beaches. Oskar Metsavaht, president of Instituto-E and Honorary Consul of Estonia in Rio de Janeiro, Rainer Nõlvak, founder of the international movement Let’s Do It! and A Pter, Foreign Minister and head of the Estonian delegation to Rio+20 hosted the event, which gathered around 200 participants to clean up the areas of the Girl from Ipanema Park, the Diabo Beach and the Arpoador rock and beach.
The initiative was named World Cleanup Rio+20 and it was a part of the international World Cleanup 2012 event. The event had the support of DHL, Brasil/s Soluções em Sustentabilidade, VideVerde, NIMA PUC, Ambiente Responsável GSA, ActionShop Serviços Ambientais, Fotosfera, Bio Hardware, SurfRider Foundation, Janara Morena, DJ Lili, Fundação Logofísica, Limpa Brasil, COOPAMA and Clube Marimbás.
