2021–2030 United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) is a global effort to better understand the ocean and generate the knowledge needed to improve the way we care for it. It connects research with the real needs of people and the planet, helping countries and communities make better decisions that support a healthy ocean and a sustainable future.

2027 Rio Ocean Conference — April 5–9, 2027

From 5 to 9 April 2027, Rio de Janeiro will become a meeting point for people and organizations working for the ocean – from scientists and governments to civil society, social movements, foundations, businesses, local communities and cultural voices. With the 2027 Ocean Decade Conference at its heart, the week will offer opportunities to share experiences and build partnerships, so that together we can strengthen solutions to the challenges facing the ocean and nurture more sustainable ways of living with the waters that connect us.

“2027 Ocean Decade Conference is a unique opportunity to advance ocean causes through engagement.”

The Oceans Project

The ocean connects ecosystems, economies, cultures and people. Addressing the challenges of the Ocean Decade requires more than science: it calls for collaboration across sectors, education for new generations and experiences that can engage society as a whole.

Oceans is Instituto-E’s response to this call. An integrated project that extends the reach of the Conference and turns knowledge into action.

Four initiatives, one shared purpose: to strengthen ocean literacy and advance solutions for a more sustainable future.

recognize

Transformation begins by recognizing those who are already making a difference.

The e-Oceans Award will celebrate and raise the profile of leaders, scientists, organizations and initiatives contributing to ocean science, coastal management and sustainable development.

By combining public recognition, knowledge production and the exchange of experiences, the Award will highlight inspiring work, share valuable solutions and encourage new commitments to the goals of the Ocean Decade.

educate

The ocean’s future begins in the classroom.

The Blue School Brazil Program maps sustainability and environmental education initiatives that make the waters shaping each territory part of the learning experience. It certifies as “Blue Schools” educational institutions that bring this connection to life through their practices.

Developed in partnership with Maré de Ciência/Unifesp, Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation – MCTI, Brazilian Ministry of Education – MEC and UNESCO, the program begins with what educators, students and communities are already creating. By connecting these local experiences with the principles of ocean literacy, it recognises existing initiatives, strengthens teaching practices and student leadership, and helps the themes of the Ocean Decade take root in education.

inspire

Culture transforms knowledge into belonging and action.

The Ocean Cultural Festival will bring a multidisciplinary programme of contemporary art, music, film and outdoor sports activities to Rio de Janeiro. Complementing the Conference’s institutional program, it will offer civil society a space to participate in the conversations shaping the ocean’s future.

By connecting science, culture, sport and the city, the Festival broadens the reach of the ocean agenda and invites society to experience the ocean as part of our natural, cultural and human heritage.

collaborate

Shared challenges call for solutions built together.

The Skills and Inspiration Special Event will bring together organizations, scientists, governments and civil society to deepen understanding of the ocean and strengthen the capacity to act for its future. Part of the official 2027 Ocean Decade Week programme, this full-day gathering will be organized by an international consortium that includes Instituto-E.

Through workshops, dialogues and interactive experiences, participants will exchange knowledge and develop proposals that connect education, science and culture with caring for the ocean. Their contributions will help shape the Ocean Decade’s priorities, actions and solutions in Ocean Literacy and Capacity Development, mobilizing partnerships and commitments to put them into practice.
